"Kazakhs are big hunters of tea; they drink it in large quantities. The poorest family drinks up to two pounds of tea (800 grams) and two pounds of sugar per month. And more well-to-do ones – up to eight pounds (3 kg)" (Turgay newspaper of 1894). Despite such a large consumption of tea, Kazakhs preferred to drink it from small, or even very small bowls. It was not customary to fill the bowl to the brim, but only for one or two sips. A frequent request for an addition of tea was considered a manifestation of the guest’s respect for the hosts. In turn, the hosts showed the guest respect and desire for a longer stay at the table. The brew should not be deep enough for the drink to have a beautiful color – not very light and not quite dark.
